While this is not a luxurious trip, it will be comfortable tour that will take you to visit the sights. See wonderful, incredible things, as well as the realities of daily life in India. This tour will capture your imagination with unbelievable palaces, mighty fortresses, ancient cities, bustling marketplaces, quaint villages, magnificent temples and absolutely stunning scenery.
There are some busy days in the North, as there is so much to see, but things slow down in the tropical South, with time to relax and enjoy your surroundings. The sightseeing program is comprehensive, but not strenuous, though a fair bit of walking may be involved at times. Some free time has been included to allow you to relax, or for the more intrepid to explore a little on your own.
Accommodation
Accommodation will be moderate to good, comfortable, occasionally even posh. Sometimes a few modern conveniences are sacrificed to stay in fabulous heritage accommodation, on a cardamom plantation or a houseboat. All accommodation has private washroom facilities, most will have air conditioning.
Highlights
Ajit Bhawan Palace, quirky and charming, a throwback to a bygone era. Brunton Boatyard - location, location, location! This first-class hotel sits in a prime spot on the northern tip of Fort Cochin, a stone's throw away from the Chinese fishing nets. Windermere Estate, a cardamom plantation high in the hills above Munnar, it has a wonderful rustic character, but is very comfortable - and what a setting! Spice Village, your gateway to Periyar. Just wandering the hotel grounds is a spice tour in itself, a lovely and tranquil spot.
Meals
Food glorious food, if you enjoy Indian food you will be very satisfied. If you don't, the choices will be more limited, but you will not starve! Breakfast and dinner are included daily. Breakfast is typically a buffet - Indian and Western choices will be available. Dinner will usually be a buffet of Indian dishes with limited Western choices, though there may be times when only a set Indian meal is offered. Beverages are at your own expense. Some lunches are included on days when you are out-and-about. Otherwise, you typically return to the hotel for a long break at mid-day, so you will have time to eat lunch if you wish. You may prefer to carry some snacks, rather than having a meal - granola bars, crackers, etc. ***Please note that your meal plan may be customized.
What to Wear
Dress comfortably, but conservatively - long pants or long skirts/dresses, shirts with sleeves. (Shorts and bare shoulders are not appropriate). There are no formal occasions to worry about, casual wear is fine for dinner. Laundry service will be available at most hotels.
