Morning City Tour, Semonggok Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre

|
A city of contrasts, your city tour this morning will invite you to experience the glorious heritage of a people whose origins are shrouded in the mists of time. Your tour will include a visit to the diverse religious sites of Tua Peh Kong Temple, St. Thomas' Cathedral and a Hindu Temple. Next visit the Sarawak Museum, the State Parliament House, State Mosque, Native Market, a Fishing Village and the famous Fort Margherita.
Return to the hotel with some time at leisure for lunch. This afternoon, travel out of the city to visit the Semonggok Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. This is the best place in Sarawak to view semi-wild orangutans, who have been rescued from captivity and trained to survive in the surrounding forest reserve. The rehabilitated animals roam freely in the rainforest, and often return to the centre at feeding time. Thanks to the successful breeding program at Semonggok, there is a good possibility of seeing one of the most heart-warming sights in Borneo - an orangutan mother with a young baby. The centre is 30-minute drive from Kuching and another 20 minutes on foot. Along the way, visitors pass-by the ethno-botanical gardens, with their unique collection of rainforest plants.

Take a full-day excursion today to Bako National Park. Situated about 38 km from Kuching on the Maura Tebas peninsula at the mouth of the Sarawak River, the park can be reached by car and longboat in one and a half hours. The journey takes you past beautiful nipah palms, coconut plantations and mangrove swamps. A unique feature of Bako is the way nature has delightfully combined spectacular landscape of steep coastline cliffs, weather-eroded rock formations and wave-beaten sea stacks with abundant flora and fauna, wildlife and a thriving mangrove swamp. It is a rare place that should please even the most demanding photographer or wildlife and nature enthusiast. Bako supports several types of distinct vegetation - open shrub land and hardy flora at the plateau of the hill range changing to lush and tall rainforest trees and plants and lowland dipterocarp forest on the slopes and finally to casuarinas and mangrove trees along the coast. It is also home to numerous species of birds, snakes and animals such as the proboscis monkeys, long tailed macaques, wild boars, sambar deer and monitor lizards. Sixteen well-demarcated paths within the parks can be followed without any difficulty or fear of getting lost. Either packed lunch or coffee-shop style lunch at the park's canteen will be provided.
